What is fibre optics and how does it work?

What is fibre optics and how does it work? This is a question that many people ask themselves.

Although we all recognise this term, not many know in detail what fibre optics is and how it works.

We tell you all about it below.

I want to get my travel cheque!

Spain is one of the European countries where fibre optics is most widespread and developed. However, many people are unaware of how it works and its advantages over other methods. In the following, you will find out exactly what fibre optics is, as well as an in-depth look at its most important characteristics.

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, 81% of Spanish households enjoyed internet at home with more than 100Mbps in 2018. This makes Spain the country with the most extensive fibre network (FTTH) in Europe, with more than 43 million accesses. Axarfusion continues to do its bit by increasing its fibre optic network in Axarquia, reaching even those areas that are not very attractive for the big companies. Competa, Benamargosa, Canillas de Aceituno… are some of the areas where Axarfusion fibre optic is available. But this is not all, we continue working to reach more areas of the Axarquia.

But what exactly is fibre optics? From a technical point of view, optical fibre consists of a cable with glass filaments inside. This cable is a channel for the transmission of light pulses, which contain data, and which are created by a transmitter. On reaching an optical receiver, the light is transformed into electrical impulses. This structure results in a more stable and faster Internet connection.

Advantages of fibre optics over ADSL

The structure and features that are part of the fibre optic network give it great advantages over ADSL. Some of the most prominent are:

  • Reduction of signal loss.
  • Greater connection stability.
  • Great increase in speed, both uphill and downhill.
  • Increased bandwidth, allowing a greater number of computers to be connected without slowing down.
  • A more secure network.

What types of fibre optics are there?

Among the most commonly marketed types of fibre optics, there are two main ones:

  • FTTH
  • HFC

In the first case, fibre FTTH stands for Fiber to home, i.e. fibre to the home. This type of connection guarantees that it is direct to the home, offering high quality and symmetrical speed.

On the other hand, HFC (Hybrid Fiber Coaxial) fibre translates as Fibre-Coaxial. Unlike FTTH fibre, in this case there is an intermediate node that subsequently connects to each home via a coaxial cable, i.e. it does not go directly to the home. The main disadvantages are that its speed is slightly slower than that of FTTH fibre, and it is not symmetrical, so upload speed is much lower than download speed.

Both types of fibre have advantages over ADSL. However, FTTH fibre provides a faster and more symmetrical direct-to-home connection. Also, HFC fibre can suffer from interference due to the existence of the coaxial cable, which is not the case for FTTH. It can therefore be concluded that FTTH fibre offers better results and performance compared to HFC.

At Axarfusion we are committed to bringing FTTH fibre optic to every corner of Axarquia, as it is the only one that guarantees real connection speed. We also have the perfect tariff for you, whether it’s 20Mb, 300Mb or 600Mb. Find out if we have coverage in your area and get information without obligation.
